Stencilled Concrete and Resin: A Homeowner’s Guide

Stencilled concrete and resin homeowner guide by Stamp Stone

Two decorative finishes with different strengths

Stencilled concrete and resin can both create an attractive driveway, patio or path, but they are different systems. The best fit depends on the existing surface, intended use, drainage, access, design and the level of future maintenance you are comfortable with.

What is stencilled concrete?

Stencilled concrete uses a patterned stencil and colour treatment to create the appearance of paving, stone or other decorative finishes within a continuous concrete surface. Pattern scale, border details and colour should be chosen to complement the property rather than overpower it.

What is a resin surface?

A resin driveway combines aggregate with a resin system to produce a decorative finish. The specification and installation method matter, including the condition and suitability of the base. Ask exactly which system is proposed and how drainage will be managed.

Preparation and site assessment

Before selecting a finish, assess ground conditions, existing cracks or movement, excavation requirements, thresholds, inspection covers, edges, falls and vehicle use. A decorative top surface cannot compensate for unsuitable preparation beneath it.

Design, colour and edges

View realistic samples in natural light and consider how the colour works with the brickwork, paths and boundaries. Borders can help define parking and pedestrian areas, but a simpler design often ages more comfortably.

Cleaning and maintenance

Maintenance varies by system, exposure and use. Keep the surface clear of debris, deal with staining promptly and follow the installer’s advice for cleaning, repairs or resealing. Avoid assuming that every decorative surface needs the same treatment.
