Plan the charger and driveway together
If a driveway is being installed or refurbished, it is sensible to discuss the EV charger early. The parking position, charger location, cable route and any underground ducting can then be coordinated before the final surface is completed.
Choose a practical charging position
Consider where the vehicle normally parks, which side its charging port is on and whether the lead could cross a path or create a trip hazard. The charger should remain accessible without obstructing gates, bins or everyday movement.
Electrical assessment comes first
A home charger is specialist electrical work. A suitably qualified installer should assess the supply, earthing, protection, proposed equipment and any required approvals or notifications. Driveway planning does not replace that electrical assessment.
Cable routes and groundwork
Routes may pass along a wall or through a correctly planned duct beneath landscaping. Agree responsibilities before work begins: who supplies the duct, where it starts and finishes, required depth, draw cord, separation from other services and how openings will be sealed.
Drainage, surfaces and protection
Charger works should not compromise surface falls or drainage. Consider how excavation will be reinstated and whether the charger needs protection from accidental vehicle contact. Inspection covers and existing utilities must remain accessible.
Allow for future use
Think about a second electric vehicle, a change in parking arrangement or a replacement charger. A thoughtful route and suitable spare capacity may make later changes easier, subject to the electrician’s design.
